KRNM is a listener supported Public
Radio station located on the campus of NMC. We broadcast at two
different locations on the dial: 88.1 FM from our transmitter site
at the studios in building N at the college (best reception for
those living in the southern villages of Saipan), and at 89.1 FM
from our translator location on the government tower on Mt. Tapochao
(providing a clearer signal for those who live in the central, eastern,
and northern areas of the island).
The bulk of our programming consists of shows sent to us via satellite
from both National Public Radio and Public Radio International.
The balance of our broadcasting days consist of volunteers
who locally produce and host an eclectic variety of shows.

Profile:
KRNM, on the campus of Northern Marianas College, received its
foundation grant in 1994 to conceptualize, design and implement
a plan to obtain public radio for Saipan and the Northern Marianas.
KRNM is a full-service, diversified public radio station.
Purpose:
An island community must have good communication facilities in order
to avoid isolation. Public radio gives Saipan an important non-commercial
link to the mainland United States and the rest of the world. Through
National Public Radio, Saipan receives award winning news programs
such as All Things Considered and Morning Edition
which provide special insights into current events around the world.
NPR also offers a variety of educational programs as well as a variety
of programs about different cultures, arts and music. BBC World
Service (from England) provides us with international news from
a different perspective than the majority of American reports that
we typically hear.
KRNM is an asset for our local people. Radio is an accessible medium,
providing an opportunity for substantial public involvement, from
production and programming to fund raising and special events. The
station reflects the needs and interests of the people of Saipan.
We are currently airing two shows with numerous students and volunteers
that educate listeners about the Chamorro and Carolinian culture
and history, as well as the cultures of other island communities
in Micronesia. We also broadcast weekly programs in Korean and Chinese,
and have aired specials in Thai, Indian, and Tagalog
KRNM is an alternative music medium, providing a source of music
that is not heavily influenced by the necessity to generate revenue.
Commercial stations on Saipan are targeted toward specific markets,
and therefore the music has a tendency to be similar and lacking
in variety. Public radio can fill the gaps and open new vistas of
music appreciation for our islands listeners through classical
and jazz programming, as well as music from all over the world.
KRNMs location at Northern Marianas College allows it to
be a valuable teaching tool for communications majors. Its placement
also makes it a useful means for the production of educational programs
by NMC students and local volunteers.
Structure:
KRNM is licensed to Northern Marianas College and is a non-profit
corporation. The studios are located on the campus of Northern Marianas
College. KRNM is affiliated with National Public Radio, The British
Broadcasting Corporation, Public Radio International and the Corporation
For Public Broadcasting. Initial funding was received from a federal
government grant and currently from listener contributions and business
underwriting support.
Operations:
KRNM broadcasts 24 hours a day, everyday of the year. KRNM operates
within the guidelines of the Federal Communication Commission and
is programmed to provide a service that satisfies the stated objectives
and goals of the station.
